There's a lot out there for you, so we'll boil it down to what you want to know: most of our youth leave the program with a healthy savings account, work experience, educational plans, and their own car. It's up to you what you leave with - whatever you want to accomplish, we'll help you get there.
Never lived on your own? That's okay! We're here for you every step of the way. We start you off with all the supplies you need: coffee pots, furniture, mattresses, dishes, and whatever else you want for your home.
As awesome as it is to have your own place, we know you don't want to be stuck there 24/7, which is why we provide you with a bike and help you figure out other transportation (riding the bus, getting your driver license, or saving for a car) so you can get to school or work when you need to.
It's not all boring, either. You'll get your own TV, and can choose to add Wi-Fi and a computer so you can do your homework (or binge your favorite show).
It doesn't matter how big or small, we want to help you manage your budget in every way possible. We'll help you with:
Our goal is the same as yours: understanding your options and being prepared for the life you want to build.
Whatever your future goals, we want to help you get there.
If you want to enroll in Shasta College with plans to transfer to a UC, then we'll work together with your college counselors to get you there.
If you want work experience and a job you can jump right into, then we're here to help you understand your options for work and apprenticeships so you can get moving as quickly as you want to.
If you aren't sure, we'll be on your side to help you get the information and experience you need to make the right choice.
You're not on your own, either. Jumping into adulthood can be overwhelming, and we're not expecting you to know it all. That's why we have THP-NMD social workers that will meet with you weekly to check in, answer questions and keep you on track with your goals. If you ever need more help, we're only a phone call or a text away.
If you are 18-21 years old, were in foster care for any length of time after your 16th birthday, and think you'd be a good fit for THP-NMD, ask your social worker or probation officer to give us a call for more information.
We'd love to meet you! Feel free to visit during normal business hours.
